nationally, the latest gallup poll shows mitt romney leading president obama 49% to 47%. that spread is within the margin of error, so it's essentially a tie. in ohio, new polling today shows this: pollster a.r.g. has romney up by one point, 48% to 47%. but a cnn poll has the president up by four, 51% to 47%. either way, it's an improvement for romney who was falling well behind in ohio until last week's debate. both candidates were in ohio today where this is the last day to register to vote. our campaign 2012 correspondents are there, too, and we'll go to nancy cordes with the obama campaign. >> reporter: scott, ohio is the grand prize for the obama campaign. they have 120 field offices here, the president has held 17 rallies in this state, more than any other state, but in the debate last week he failed to mention some major issues that are very important to ohio voters, like that auto bailout or shipping jobs overseas. that's a mistake he did not make today here in columbus. >> when you think about ohio, when governor romney said that we should let the auto industry g

a gallup poll out today has romney at 49%, president obama 47%. that is within the poll's margin of error so it is still essentially a tie. the two campaigns tangled today over the definition of one of the shortest words in the english language. the question is whether vice president biden misled the american people in the debate last night and whether he had misused the word "we." biden was responding to charges that the state department turned down requests for more security in libya before the terror attack last month that killed the u.s. ambassador and three other americans. here's what the vice president said. >> well, we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security again. and, by the way, at the time we were told exactly -- we said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew. that was the assessment. >> pelley: the fight today was over what he meant by "we." our campaign 2012 correspondents on r on the story and we'll go first to jan crawford who gotten a earful from the romney campaign

today's gallup daily tracking poll has mitt romney up by two points, 49% to 47%. but a new "washington post" poll has the president up three points. both polls are within their margins of error, so it's a tie. as we look on the debate hall at hofstra university in new york, let's bring in our political director, john dickerson. john, the format tomorrow is a town hall meeting. what kind of challenges does that present for the candidates? >> well, both candidates are trying to strike a balance, criticize their opponent while not appearing so aggressive that they turn off voters. that would be hard to do in any debate setting, but in this case they'll be doing it in response to a question from a voter in the audience. the more the candidate talks about their opponents' flaw it is more it looks like they're not answering the voter's question. it's one thing to ignore at a moderator but when it's a voter it's more dangerous, especially when the voter shows their displeasure on their face for the cameras. >> pelley: john, you've been talking to your sources at the obam
